Suez Canal navigation 'safe' after nearby bomb attack
The head of the Suez Canal Authority says the canal is safe following a bomb attack close to one of its buildings on Saturday.
A car bomb exploded in the city of Ismailia, on the Suez Canal, close to the headquarters of the Egyptian intelligence services injuring six people.
Head of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish said “[The] Suez Canal is completely safe and navigation is normal in the canal” according to Egypt’s State Information Service. He said 56 ships were transiting the canal.
The explosion that took place outside the military intelligence premises which is adjacent to an administrative building of the authority in the canal city of Ismailia had no effect on the navigation stream of the canal nor on the ships, Mamish added.
Security concerns about the canal were heightened at the beginning of September after three men were arrested for firing machine guns and rocket propelled grenades at the Cosco Asia which was transiting the canal.
