The US government shutdown has closed the merchant marine academy at King’s Point.

In a notice on its website the US Merchant Marine Academy said it was closed due to a lapse in funding and the page would updated if there was any change in status. The shutdown comes one day after the academy celebrated its 70th anniversary.
The US government partially shut down on Tuesday after failure by legislature to agree the government’s budget plans. The shutdown has placed 700,000 federal employees on unpaid leave.
Apart from the closing of the maritito academy shipping is largely unaffected at this stage with functions such as the US Coastguard and Customs continuing ot operate.
