Asiatic Lloyd vessel struck by projectiles in the Gulf of Aden
A Singapore-flagged container ship Lobiva has been struck by unidentified projectiles in the Gulf of Aden causing a fire.
The Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said that the ship manager for the Lobiva informed the authority that it had been “struck by unidentified projectiles while transiting the Gulf of Aden”.
The strikes on the vessel resulted in a fire on the 2,000 teu container ship, which was extinguished by the crew. All the crew are reported to be safe.
The UKMTO reported that a vessel was hit by unknown projectiles 83 nm Southeast of Aden Yemen. It is not clear if the projectiles were airborne or sea drones, which the Houthi in Yemen have recently started to use to attack ships in the Red Sea. The Houthi have also extended the range of their attacks into the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
The Houthi have not claimed responsibility for the attack.
“Lobivia is moving under her own propulsion and has arrived at Berbera Port, Somalia to assess the damage and repairs needed,” MPA said in a statement.
The Singapore-flagged vessel is run by Asiatic Lloyd Maritime LP in the Republic and part of the fleet of Asiactic/Atlantic Lloyd Group of companies.
“MPA is in contact with the vessel manager to provide any assistance required. The Republic of Singapore Navy’s Information Fusion Centre has alerted its security partners in the Gulf of Aden region to provide any assistance required,” the Singapore authority added.
