The security contractors from Trident Group were found dead in a cabin onboard the US-flag Maersk Line Limited vessel made famous by its 2009 Somali piracy hijacking and subsequent Hollywood movie Captain Philips.

“Maersk Line Limited can confirm that two security contractors were found dead in a cabin on board Maersk Alabama in the afternoon of 18 February in Port Victoria, Seychelles. The relevant authorities were immediately informed, and local law enforcement agencies have started an investigation,” Maersk said in a statement.

Both Maersk and security provider Trident said the deaths were not related to their duties onboard the vessel.

“The cause of the death for both men is part of the ongoing investigation, but it was not related to vessel operations or their duties as security personnel,” Maersk said.

“Seychelles authorities are conducting a full investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident. There is no immediate indication as to the cause of death, but the deaths were not caused by operational activity,” said Thomas Rothrauf, president and ceo of Trident.

Trident said it would not be releasing further information about the deceased, who are reported to be 44-year old former US Navy Seals.

Maersk said the security personnel had boarded the vessel on 29 January and the Maersk Alabama had docked in Port Victoria on 17 February.

“Contracted security is part of anti-piracy protection plans to safeguard crews and vessels. In Maersk Alabama’s case, she is persistently in high-risk areas since she provides feeder service to the east coast of Africa,” Maersk said.

“The vessel was cleared to complete cargo operations, and she is now at anchor awaiting further instructions.”
