Having last month become the only electrochlorination (EC) system to be granted US Alternative Management System (AMS) approval in all salinities, Evoqua’s Seacure system has been selected alongside Trojan Marinex and Bio Sea to form part of Damen’s one stop retrofitting service, available at 32 yards. “Basically you come in for a refit, into drydock, and you can go ahead and have your ballast water needs met as well,” explained John Deaver, Evoqua communications director.

The EC process involves the electrical charging of the intake ballast water to produce a biocide which kills – rather than neutralising, as with UV treatment – the micro-organisms in the mix. “The filter is differentiated in that we have a US patent for actually injecting biocide on the filter intake. This is such a simple idea it limits the accumulation of marine growth from the outset on the marine filter intake.”

Now that the US Coast Guard has given AMS approval for the system, SeaCure will be rigorously tested and considered for full USCG Type Approval, the requirements of which are expected to be finalised in early 2015. “There’s a lot of momentum,” said Deaver. “Damen AMS acceptance, and the application going forward for full US Coast Guard type approval. We’re pretty confident.”
