Maersk Line's largest container ship arrived in Palermo yesterday after leaving Port Said on 17 February under tow by Fairmount Marine's super tug Fairmount Alpine.
Despite the leak being sealed by initial repair work at Port Said, full assessment and repair of the 156,907 dwt ship may take months.
The Emma Maersk was carrying 13,536 teu when a breach in the stern thruster tunnel late on 1 February caused the main engine room to flood, leaving her without power at the entrance to the Suez Canal. The ship was towed to Port Said where she berthed early on 2 February and remained of for two weeks. Alternate arrangements were made within the Maersk fleet for all cargo; no replacement tonnage was chartered in.
