The LR2 tanker owned by Frontline suffered an explosion on 13 June shortly after passing the Strait of Hormuz which is believed to have been caused by a limpet mine attached the vessel by Iranian forces.

“Front Altair is presently undergoing repairs and is expected to resume operation in the fourth quarter of 2019,” Frontline said in its second quarter results announcement.

The Front Altair’s 23 crew were uninjured in the explosion despite the significant damage caused to the vessel. “The company’s modern vessels are designed to withstand catastrophic events in order to ensure the safety of the crew and cargo,” Frontline added.

Norwegian Shipowners’ Mutual War Risks Insurance Association (DNK), which insured the vessel, warned last week that more attacks on shipping, especially oil and gas related, in the area by Iran were “highly likely”.
