The new tool compares conventional diver hull cleaning with GAC’s HullWiper Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) method, which uses pressurised water jets to dislodge fouling without damaging the paint beneath.

Developed over the past year in response to calls for a quick, easy-to-use method of comparison, the calculator takes into account vessel size, speed, voyage, fuel type and temperature.

GAC’s system does not require divers, and the company claims the system can save up to 30% on costs related to antifouling coatings, and total savings of between 50-100% for shipping companies, taking operational costs into consideration.

“This new tool gives users an easy way to plan their route, calculate and compare savings,” said HullWiper inventor and GAC EnvironHull technical director Robert Anderson. “With it, they can make an informed decision about which hull cleaning system to use to optimise their vessel’s performance and profit.”
