Search and rescue operations are continuing after a passenger ship carrying 458 people sank in China’s Yangtze River on Monday night, local media reported.

Hundreds were feared dead as around 10 people had been rescued as of Tuesday, after the vessel sank when it set sailed from the eastern city of Nanjing to the southwestern city of Chongqing.

The cause of the sinking in the Jianli region of Hubei province was not immediately clear, but the rescued passengers said the vessel sank rapidly after it was caught in a storm.

Among the people rescued included the vessel’s captain and engineering. The pair were reportedly detained by the police for questioning, according to state-owned news agency Xinhua.
