Two days of events in Athens  this week were overseen by chairman and ceo, Chon Young-kee, from the technical seminars to the closing dinner and ‘KR Hellas Night 2013’ which had a distinctly Korean flavour, the message of a more outward approach was evident.

Kwon Jae-geun, KR’s vp and manager of its European heaquarters which has been based on Athens’ south coast since 2008, is among those leading the drive to expand the present classed fleet of just under 3,000 ships of 63.2m gt.

After the election of Chon as chairman and ceo of KR in March, the register launched a programme of development with the aim to grow more internationally and diverse. Its ultimate aim is to become “a total engineering service provider,” through synergies with its sister companies, – iKR (Innovation KR) and KRE (KR Engineering Co Ltd).

It also intends to become more active in global organisations such as IACS and the Imo. Its new headquarters is in Busan, South Korea, but besides regional headquarters in Athens, Shanghai and Singapore, KR has another 60 offices around the world.

As a builder of some of the most technically advanced ships, the KR seminar focused on eco-ship design and the new guidelines for container stowage and lashing.
