The range provides options for owners that are considering Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), low-sulphur Marine Gas Oil (MGO) or LNG.

Owners looking to build new future-proof vessels – or future-proof existing vessels – are increasingly looking to MAN’s dual-fuel offerings. For example, Russian shipowner Sovcomflot earlier this year chose Man’s 51/60DF engine for a programme of LNG carrier newbuilds at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding in South Korea.

Each vessel was propelled by a set of two 8L and two 9L51/60DF engines. The dual-fuel technology allows the carriers to make the switch between ordinary fuel oil and LNG, both to provide insurance against the ever-shifting landscape of fuel pricing and availability, and also to allow the vessel to switch to a more environmentally friendly fuel when entering ECAs.

Meanwhile, in August MAN made an important breakthrough in the Chinese market, entering into an agreement with Dalian Marine Propeller that allows DMMP to produce and sell MAN propellers of the Alpha Kappel design in China. Torben Johansen, head of Propeller & Aft Ship, MAN D&T, commented: “This agreement will greatly help us to penetrate the FP propeller market with our highly efficient Kappel design principle as DMMP is among the major suppliers of large-scale propellers for Chinese shipbuilding.”

Some MAN-DMMP propellers were subsequently sold to Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry’s yard in Frederikshavn, to be used in the construction of three 8500ceu Pure Car/Truck Carriers (PCTCs) for Höegh Autoliners, which are to become the largest in the world. The propellers were chosen after Frederikshavn reports that tank tests on different propeller configurations showed MAN’s Kappel design was the most efficient.
