Already equipped with an MAN B&W two-stroke engine, four-bladed controllable-pitch propeller and PTO-driven shaft alternator, each Kværner-Class vessel will be fitted with MAN Kappel propeller blades, a fairing cone and a pre-fabricated rudder bulb kit, yielding power savings and reduced emissions. The devices will be fitted during dockings between 2015 and 2017.
Ships to be upgraded include Bow Flower, Bow Clipper, Bow Fortune, Bow Cecil, Bow Flora, Bow Cardinal, Bow Faith, Bow Cedar, Bow Fagus, Bow Chain and Bow Firda.
Each set of Kappel blades, fairing cone and rudder bulb is individually optimised for the tanker’s hull and rudder shape, with power savings verified by tank testing at Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK).
“It’s a very exciting project and we are proud to be part of it. With our new design possibilities, we are furthermore looking forward to offering this fuel-saving concept to other fleets with similar operational patterns,” said MAN D&T Propeller & Aft Ship organisation business development manager Kjartan Ross. “With the long lifetime expectancy of Odfjell’s high value, quality vessels, this upgrade investment is straightforward and very attractive”.
