Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has pledged $10,000 in cash aid to help support the victims of the Taal volcanic eruption in the Philippines.

MOL said it has also begun to solicit funds from group members to fund relief efforts in disaster-stricken areas in the Philippines.

Close to 500,000 have been evacuated from an exclusion zone around the volcano since an eruption on 12 January, and scientists continue to fear a more major eruption is imminent.

MOL is a major employer of Filipino seafarers. “MOL Group businesses have been supported from the seafarers, their families and friends from the Philippines, and has been deeply involved in the nation in various fields including the operation of the maritime university and the group’s dry bulkship operation control centre,” the company said.

“The MOL Group sincerely hopes that everyone who suffered during this disaster will be able to return to normal life as soon as possible.”
