The newbuildings will be delivered from February 2016 through to January 2018. The new vessels will be equipped with fuel efficiency and will improve cargo loadability among today's containerships of similar size, according to NYK.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. NYK also did not name the company behind the order.

After delivery, the ships will be deployed into the Asia-Europe trade as replacements for existing ships, including four 13,000 teu vessels chartered from Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).
