Only 300 newbuildings ordered so far in 2016

Underscoring the crisis facing the shipbuilding industry just 300 newbuildings have been booked year-to-date according classification society DNV GL.

Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen ceo of DNV GL Maritime told a media briefing at Posidonia 2016 that only 300 newbuildings totaling 11m gt had been ordered in the year-to-date. Of theseorders for 30 valemax VLOCs accounted for 60% in terms of the total tonnage.

He noted that this was very challenging for yards, suppliers and other related business segments. However, Ørbeck-Nilssen, added, “If you look at the bigger picture there is still overcapacity, so it is a good thing.”
