OrbitMI unveils real-time weather routeing system

Working with weather data provider, DTN, the software company’s Orbit Weather+ enables ship personnel, shore-based managers and charterers to share real-time data for the most cost-, time-, or carbon-effective transits.

The constantly updated meteorological data from DTN enables voyages to be optimised not only at the outset but also by using weather updates that can provide a basis for voyage refinements as they take place. The system also enables constant carbon intensity indicator (CII) monitoring for subsequent vessel assessments.

Up to 50% of emissions depend on voyage efficiency, the company claims. So the low-cost system – $400 per ship per month – has significant potential to yield financial benefits for owners and their chartering customers. Potential returns on investment are estimated at 10%, 20% or even 30%, depending on prevailing conditions, according to Chief Marketing Officer, David Levy.

Instead of relying on shore-based weather data which may not mirror conditions at sea, the real-time data enables stakeholders to collaborate on achieving the optimal passage outcome. Easily workable ‘what-if’scenarios can be developed and assessed.

Levy emphasised that ship masters will continue to be responsible for safe passage. But, he said, the digital system provide a tool to support optimal route planning and subsequent real-time modifications. The software can be instantly updated, within about a minute, to assess the impact of voyage alterations including course, speed, and arrival time. Changes in operational circumstances – such as port congestion or berth availability – can also be factored in.

OrbitMI has already attracted a number of ship operators including Furetank, H-Line Shipping, Klaveness, Stena, and Western Bulk.
