The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) has voted to accept a tentative five-year contract with US West Coast dockworkers that was agreed in February after nine months of negotiations

The contract now has to be ratified the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) with a vote expected to take place on 22 May. If ratified the agreement will run retroactively from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2019 and covers 20,000 dockworkers.
A three month period of go-slows by union members and suspension of operations by terminal operators prior to reaching the tentative agreement caused by congestion in US West Coast ports.
“The disruptions that occurred during negotiations, and the inconvenience and hardship created by them, were regrettable,” said Jim McKenna president and ceo of the PMA. “We look forward to building upon the incredible advantages West Coast ports offer and winning back the trust and confidence of the shipping community. This contract provides important tools to accomplish that.”
