North China-based shipyard, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), is to build the first LNG powered VLCC for Cosco Shipping Energy Transportation.

The VLCC, is one of the four VLCCs Cosco Shipping Energy Transportation ordered earlier. The vessel will be upgraded to LNG-power and be equipped with dual fuel LNG propulsion system, which could reduce CO2 by 20% and sulphur emissions by 95%.

This LNG powered VLCC is due for delivery at the end of 2021 while the remaining three will be delivered before the end of March 2021.

Cosco Shipping Energy Transportation inked contracts to build four 319,000 dwt VLCCs at DSIC In November 2017 to optimize its overall route arrangements and improve its operating efficiency and profitability.

In April this year, the two parties signed the Memorandum of Cooperation for developing LNG dual fuel VLCC, intending to jointly promote adoption of LNG as major fuel on VLCC to achieve the goal of emission reduction.
