Taiwanese shipowner Wan Hai Lines has placed an order at South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for five 13,200 teu containerships at a cost of $550m.

The new boxships will start delivering in the first quarter of 2023, which will become the largest vessels of Wan Hai’s fleet in terms of carrying capacity.

Wan Hai said the new shipbuilding contract was its fleet renewal plan to ensure that the company’s vessel fleet is able to maintain competitive and support continuous market development.

Earlier in March, Wan Hai Lines announced plans to acquire nine vessels around 13,000 teu.

Wan Hai Lines currently operates a fleet of 74 self-owned vessels and 57 chartered vessels.
