ASRY appoints Dr. Ahmed AlAbri as CEO
The Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (ASRY) has filled its CEO role after a long period under acting chief executives.
Dr. Ahmed AlAbri has been appointed CEO of ASRY effective August 2024, bringing over 25 years of experience in the maritime industry to the role.
AlAbri joins from a seven-year stint as CEO at ASYAD Ports and has three years' experience as deputy CEO at Oman Drydrock Company. He holds a PhD in Operational and Environmental Management of Shipyards & Ports from the UK's University of Portsmouth, and a master’s degree in Maritime Engineering Sciences and bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture from the UK's University of Southampton.
ASRY has had a multiple changes in its senior leadership in recent years since previous CEO Andy Shaw moved to an advisory role in 2019 after two years at the helm. Magdy Sharkawy was appointed acting CEO in July 2019, before CEO responsibilities were taken over by Mazen Mohammed Matar in his role as Managing Director later the same year through to January 2024.
Sahar Ataaei was appointed deputy CEO in 2022 and left the role in February 2024, according to her LinkedIn profile. Shaikh Mohamed bin Rashed bin Abdulrahman AlKhalifa was appointed deputy CEO in January 2024, ASRY told Seatrade.
HE Aymen bin Tawfeeq AlMoayed, ASRY chairman of the board, commented: “we are naturally proud to have one of the most experienced and competent leaders rising up our executive management team.”
AlMoayed said that AlAbri’s experience and knowledge of the of the regional maritime industry would contribute to supporting ASRY’s ongoing modernisation plans, and that he will play a pivotal role in realising company’s strategic development and sustainable growth.
