Becker wins orders to increase fuel efficiency

Amid all the talk of future fuels and yet-to-be-tested exhaust cleaning systems, Becker Marine Systems is one manufacturer at Marintec China that will be promoting a “here and now” solution for increasing fuel efficiency by refining the way hulls move through the water.

Becker uses Computational Fluid Dynamics to manufacture tailor-made ducts to reduce cavitation and improve the quality of inflow into the ship’s propeller, thereby reducing resistance and allowing major fuel savings to be made.

In October, Becker announced that it had been commissioned to equip five 18,000 teu newbuilds for China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), under construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. The orders involved high-performance rudders.

Becker managing director Henning Kuhlmann said: “This Chinese shipping company sets great store in the quality of the rudders – relevant towing tank tests conducted in Asia turned out positively in favour of our rudders.”

Becker was also awarded a contract for 11 Twisted Leading Edge King Support Rudders. They are

being provided for 10,000 teu ships belonging to Canada’s Seaspan Ship Management. “It’s entirely possible for us to be awarded subsequent orders, because this series is likely to be extended to a total of 20 to 25 ships,” said Kuhlmann.

Added to this is an order for four rudders for 9,400 teu container ships belonging to Italy-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) as well as flap rudders for two Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels manufactured in China.
