It is the first order Byzantine Maritime has placed at Chinese yard, which has previously ordered newbuilds from yards in Japan and South Korea.

The four 41,000 dwt vessels, designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), will be constructed by New Dayang, the shipbuilding unit of SUMEC.

With the signing of the vessels, New Dayang Shipbuilding will be capable of building all major types of bulk carriers in  the 82,000 dwt, 64,000 dwt and 41,000 dwt range.

Byzantine Maritime commenced operation in the early 1970's and has maintained a medium to small sized bulk carrier fleet.
