A delegation from Chinese construction company China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) led by its chairman Mo Wenhe visited Panama Canal administrator Jorge Quijano to express its interest in the possible construction of the waterway fourth set of locks.

Seatrade Global reported in July 2013 that Canal officials were studying adding a fourth set of locks, even wider and longer than the third set of locks presently in construction, to cater to the growth of super post-panamaxes vessels under construction in Asian shipyards.

CHEC chairman Mo expressed interest in the Panama Canal projects programmed projects during the upcoming years.  "We are exploring our participation in all Canal projects, especially in the design, construction and financing of a fourth set of locks," he told Quijano.

Another giant and rival China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has been awarded the contract of feasibility studies for the Nicaragua Canal.

CHEC, which has a business office in Panama and several port contracts in the region, is said to be looking at setting up a regional office in Panama.
