Chinese yards expect lower volume of newbuild orders in H2

Three major shipbuilding indexes for Chinese shipbuilders all posted healthy growth in the first half of 2021.

The newly received order volume was 38.24m dwt, up some 206.8% year-on-year, according to the statistics released by China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI).

However, the number of new orders is expected to moderate in the in the second half of the 2021. The association estimates that newbuilding order volume will decline in the second half comparing with H1; the global newbuilding order volume is expected to exceed 100m dwt for 2021 while China’s new order volume is expected to reach 50m dwt.

China’s shipbuilding output for the first half was 20.92m dwt, an increase of 19%. As at the end of June, the orderbook on hand was 86.6m dwt, an increase of 13.1%

Shipbuilding export volume was 19.75m dwt, an increase of 20.1% year on year, newly received export shipbuilding orders were 34.15m dwt, up 197.8%. Export orders on hand were 77.07m dwt as the end of June, an increase of 9.4%.

Shipbuilding export volume, new orders for export and export orders on hand accounted for 94.4%, 89.3% and 89% of national volume, respectively.

As the end of June, China’s shipbuilding output, newly received orders and orders on hand accounted for 44.9%, 51% and 45.8% respectively of the global shipbuilding market share.
