HMM has inked contracts Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for each yard to build six 13,000 teu boxships.
The vessels for delivery in the first half of 2024 and will be fitted with scrubbers and also LNG-ready in terms of fuel. The vessels will cost a total of $1.57bn.
An HMM official said, “Our newly ordered containerships will be fitted with the latest energy-efficient technologies. We expect these ships to give us strong environmental credentials, as well as to provide us with the capacity and flexibility to get our customers’ cargo to the right place at the right time.”
The latest orders from HMM add to a surge in containership newbuilding orders since the latter half of last year.
