CSSC Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding won a record order for the construction of six 174,000 cu m LNG carriers from Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL).

It is the largest single shipbuilding order for LNG carriers that Hudong Zhonghua had ever received.

Collaborating with CNOOC and Cosco Shipping, the CNY7.5bn ($1.18bn) newbuilds contract is the second large size LNG carrier order Hudong Zhonghua had secured in 2022.

CNOOC Gas & Power Group will be the charterer of the vessels upon delivery.

“The successful signing of the contract showed that, CSSC, working together with Cosco Shipping and domestic energy giants, have played an active and important role in building China's LNG transportation industry chain, expanding the diversification of natural gas resource imports, ensuring the safety of the national energy structure and the transportation safety, and realizing our national Carbon-Free goal by 2050,” said CSSCs unit China Shipbuilding Trading.

Under the guidance of Chinas "Carbon Emission Peaking" and "Carbon Neutrality" goal and energy strategy, China has surpassed Japan in 2021 to become the largest LNG importer.
