Three leading Japanese marine engine manufacturers have formed a joint venture to develop hydrogen-fuelled propulsion systems.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Yanmar Power Technologies, and Japan Engine Corporation have concluded a joint venture contract and investment in HyEng Corporation, with each company taking an equal stake.

As a new company HyEng Corp will see the three partners pursuing the development of hydrogen-fuelled marine engines. This will include the development of the basic engine technology, developing international rules and standards for hydrogen supply systems, the integration of supply systems, and maintenance and operation of hydrogen fuel engine demonstration facilities.

With the establishment of HyEng Corporation, the three companies will further advance their joint development activities and accelerate their drive to develop new markets for decarbonization in the marine domain,” Yanmar said.
