Seaspan has declared options for five 10,000 teu boxships at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

The five vessels are due to be delivered in 2015 and built to a fuel-efficient design. The New York-listed company said it expects to sign long term charters for the vessels with a major container line soon.

The options add to 11 existing firm orders Seaspan has for 10,000 teu boxships at Yangzijiang.

The shipowner added that the allocation of the vessels remained subject to a right of first refusal by Greater China Intermodal Investments its venture with The Carlyle Group, and Blue Water Commerce.
