MAN said its deal covers service installation of retrofit solutions developed for vessels in need of modification in order to meet upcoming IMO energy efficiency existing ship index (EEXI) regulations, including MC- and ME- engines. Anglo-Eastern has around 300 vessels in need of OPL solutions for mechanically- and electronically-controlled engines.
OPL is expected to be a popular method for bringing older vessels in line with EEXI regulations—energy efficiency existing ship index. Emissions reductions are achieved by restricting engines' maximum power output and therefore curbing emissions.
EEXI comes into force on 1 January 2023, and any vessel over 400 gt falling short of its requirements risk detention and fine, depending survey schedules.
Carsten Ostenfeldt, Chief Operating Officer, Anglo-Eastern Univan Group, said: “It was important for us to have a solution for our customers and vessels that was timely and cost competitive. We knew pressure would build up across the many vessels in the world in need of an OPL solution, which is why we wanted to be an early mover to ensure sufficient capacity for the retrofit of our vessels.”
