Yang Ming and Wan Hai joining Silk Alliance

Taiwan-based shipping lines, Yang Ming Marine and Wan Hai Lines have joined The Silk Alliance launched by Lloyd’s Register with other partners to develop a Green Corridor Cluster beginning with intra-Asia container trade.

Initiated by the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, The Silk Alliance brings together a diverse group paving the pathway towards maritime decarbonisation, which also includes MSC Shipmanagement Ltd., Pacific International Lines, X-Press Feeders, Keppel Offshore & Marine, Singfar International, Wärtsilä, Wilhelmsen Ship Management, Asian Development Bank and ING.

The first phase of The Silk Alliance is to focus on building Green Corridor Cluster within Asia, and will speed up decarbonisation in the maritime industry, said Yang Ming.

The Silk Alliance members will draw from their individual areas of expertise to develop a fleet-specific fuel transition strategy for container ships operating primarily in Asia, based on the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub’s First Mover Framework, according to LR. 

Named after the maritime section of the historic Silk Road, linking Southeast Asia to China, the Indian subcontinent and the Arabian Peninsula, this cross-supply chain collaboration is dedicated to delivering learnings to enable safe, commercially viable and sustainable marine transport in support of the industry’s long-term strategy to decarbonise international shipping by 2050.
