Danfoss IMarEST event underlines potential of electrification
As industry decarbonistion ambition rises and fresh regulations approach, IMarEST Dubai turned its attention to electric propulsion.

Full electrification, a highly sustainable option for ferries, workboats, and other vessels which can charge batteries regularly, combined with a renewable shore power supply, can help maritime operators achieve not only low but zero emissions on board the vessel, representatives of Danfoss, a Denmark-based marine technology and engineering concern, claimed in Dubai last week.
“Danfoss’s marine solutions work to reduce energy costs, monitor processes seamlessly, convert power optimally, and provide comfort for passengers,” the company said in a statement at the event. Danfoss’s business segments include Danfoss Climate Solutions, Danfoss Drives and Danfoss Power Solutions.
The Dubai chapter of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) played host to the event in a series which regularly gives voice to the technology and sustainability issues the marine industry faces as it strives to meet a stringent International Maritime Organisation timetable for emissions reductions.
It was sponsored by Danfoss Drives, in partnership with Technology Ventures, a Middle East-based concern providing integrated technology solutions in the areas of marine, automation and control instrumentation. IMarEst is the international membership body and learned society for marine professionals operating in the spheres of marine engineering, science, and technology.
The event was supported by H.E. Ambassador Lars Steen Nielsen, head of the Royal Danish Consulate General in Dubai, who, as a panel participant, voiced his approbation of the role played by Danish companies, such as Danfoss, in decarbonising the marine industry.
In the preceding event in the IMarEst Dubai series, in June, global ship services provider Zener Maritime Solutions warned shipping companies in the Middle East that they needed to prepare to address the implications of IMO industry targets related to the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), the operational Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), and remote surveys.

Electrifying maritime transport is a clear-cut way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Solutions exist both to build new electric ferries and to retrofit existing ferries to electrify them, with the potential to reduce carbon emissions in lakes, cities, and straits all over the world, Danfoss claimed.
