Furetank says newbuilding meets IMO 2050 emission targets today

According to Furetank the 18,000 dwt, Fure Viten, built at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Dingheng, combines gas-propulsion with other fuel saving solutions to give it an EEDI rating of 4.65, which the owner says means it meets 2050 targets today. The current EEDI value requirement for a vessel the size of the Fure Viten is 9.37.

The series of eight vessels being built in China will operate Liquid Biogas (LBG) or LNG. Furetank CEO Lars Höglund said it aims to run the vessels primarily on zero-emissions LBG by 2030. “We will operate the ships we build now for the coming 20 years, so we have put a lot of effort into investigating what is the best possible technology that we can invest in today,” he said.

The vessel has a variety of other features to lower emission such as batteries help reduce the use of auxiliary engines, a ducted propeller, an improved hull shape, and the main engine and shaft generator use variable frequency to increase propeller efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. The vessel’s cargo pumps are also designed to run from shoreside power.

“We have developed ships since the 80’s and used our entire experience to optimize every detail. There is not a single system that we haven’t improved. This combination of interacting, energy-saving technical solutions is unique,” Höglund said.

Furetank said that with the delivery of the Fure Viten its intermediate fleet will have decreased emissions by 50% compared to 2008.
