The MoU is an extension of collaboration between the companies started in 2021 when HMM worked with five Korean partners, including LOTTE, to seek end-to-end supply chain solutions for green ammonia.

LOTTE owns Korea’s largest ammonia storage facility and has agreed to secure ammonia and methanol fuels and supply them to HMM vessels. Under the terms of the MoU, HMM will carry ammonia fuel for LOTTE and “take charge of overall vessel operation during transportation”.

Last February, HMM signed newbuilding contracts for nine 9,000 teu methanol-powered containerships.

An HMM official said, “We are generating enterprise-wide efforts to accelerate our environmental initiatives for a carbon-free future. We will continue to explore sustainable and clean energies and find a way to go green.”

Beyond securing lower-carbon fuels, HMM is preparing operational tests of an onboard carbon capture system for containerships. CO2 emissions per container transported have dropped by more than half since 2010, according to the carrier.
