MHI is working in cooperation with K Line and ClassNK to install a small-scale CO2 capture demonstration plant onboard the vessel Corona Utility, conduct test operations of the plant, and measure its performance.

The project involves converting an existing CO2 capture system for onshore power plants to be used at sea onboard a vessel.

The project dubbed Carbon Capture on the Ocean (CC-Ocean) is supported by Maritime Bureau of Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).

The project will take a two year period starting with the launch of a hazard identification (HazID) study  for the design of the demonstration plant and the onboard installation. The demonstration plant will be manufactured in mid-2021 for installation on the K Line vessel Corona Utility following factory tests.

“As the world’s first marine demonstration test, the project will provide invaluable insights into facilities design and technologies for capturing CO2 emissions and achieving zero emissions onboard vessels,” K Line said.

“Additionally, the captured CO2 is expected to be recycled as a new CO2 source for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes or as raw material in synthetic fuel through methanation. In this way, the project will significantly contribute to the long-term reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.”
