Singapore-based GCMD said NYK was the first Japan-headquartered organisation to join the centre, despite Japan being the world’s third-largest ship owning nation.

NYK has over 800 major ocean going vessels across bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, LNG carriers, and more. The company’s partnership with GCMD will boost the centre’s ability and efforts to carry out pilots and trials of decarbonisation technologies.

The partnership is not the first time the organisations have worked together. NYK was a partner in GCMD’s study on ammonia bunkering and trialled a B24 blend of VLSFO biofuel on Lycaste Peace in Februuary 2023 as part of a GCMD pilot on developing an assurance framework for drop-in biofuels.

Takaya Soga, President and CEO of NYK, said: “We are honored to be GCMD’s strategic partner, and I am very confident that this partnership will greatly empower our efforts to reduce GHG emissions from the maritime sector. Through the partnership, I am looking forward to cooperating with GCMD and all its partners to realize the widespread social implementation of various decarbonisation solutions in our industry.”

Professor Lynn Loo, CEO of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation, said: “We are proud to have NYK, a prominent Japanese shipping line, join us as a Strategic Partner, given its strong commitment to decarbonisation and Japan’s standing as a major maritime nation. This Strategic Partnership agreement with NYK formalises and strengthens our existing relations in working on low-carbon solutions for international shipping.”
