Second CO2 carrier delivered to Northern Lights
Carbon storage JV prepares for transition to operational phase as first vessel approaches Norway.
Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC) has delivered the second CO2 carrier to Northern Lights JV, Northern Pathfinder, following the November 2024 delivery of Northern Pioneer.
Northern Lights said the ships will test and optimise energy saving devices during their maiden voyage from China to Norway, before commencing mechanical commissioning activities at the company’s receiving terminal in Øygarden and customer Heidelberg Materials’ Brevik terminal.
Further preparation for operation of the CO2 carriers will be carried out, including interface training between ship and shore staff.
The two vessels will collect CO2 from industrial capture sites in Europe, transporting the greenhouse gas to Northern Lights’ receiving terminal. Once offloaded, the CO2 will be pumped under the North Sea for long-term storage.
Northern Pathfinder is the second in a series of four vessels, will be registered in Norway and managed by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line). The remaining two ships are being built by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Company (DSOC).
“This marks another significant milestone in building the world’s largest dedicated CO2 shipping fleet and demonstrates Northern Lights’ commitment to building a reliable value chain to support Europe’s decarbonisation goals,” the company said.
The LNG-fuelled ships are fitted with rotor sails by Norsepower for wind-assisted propulsion and air lubrication technology to increase fuel efficiency. The ships will be both registered in Norway.
