Singapore challenges students to solve maritime industry issues

The Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) has launched the 5^th edition of the MaritimeONE case summit where groups of students can win cash prizes of up to SGD4,000 ($2,978).

The competition is supported by challenges from CMA CGM, Pacific Carriers Ltd (PCL), Petredec Global, and TotalEnergies Marine Fuels. Students from polytechnics and universities in Singapore are invited to enter challenge and teams whose proof of concepts are shortlisted will be mentored by the sponsor companies ahead of the grand finals on 7 November.

“The challenge statements this year provide an excellent opportunity for youths to gain an understanding into the diversity as well as complexity of issues that the industry is grappling with today,” Hor Weng Yew, Chairman of SMF.

In the challenge from CMA CGM student will seek to develop solutions to improve existing efforts around Scope 3 emissions.

The statement from PCL asks students to provide a platform to enhance the well-being of navigation officers. 

The challenge from Petredec is to quantify the reduction in carbon emissions arising from the substitution of biomass with LPG and evaluate LPG credentials as a transition fuel.

TEMF challenges students to outline robust frameworks and ideas to reduce carbon emissions and claim carbon savings, from using alternative fuels like bio-methane and LNG.
