Chemical tanker ablaze off Hong Kong, one dead and 21 rescued

A Vietnamese chemical tanker is on fire off Hong Kong following an explosion that has left at least crew member dead and 21 rescued.

In the latest in string of serious casualties since the end of 2018 the Aulac Fortune suffered a fire and explosion around 1 nm south of Hong Kong’s Lamma Island.

According to reports the Hong Kong Police said that one crew member had been killed while 21 had been rescued having jumped from the burning vessel. Two crew members remain missing and rescue and firefighting operations are ongoing.

A picture of the vessel posted on the Hong Kong Police Facebook page (above) showed the vessel listing heavily with fire and smoke billowing from the cargo holds in front of the accommodation block.

The 2010-built Aulac Fortune belongs to Vietnamese tanker owner Aulac Corporation.
