Frugal Propulsion is a system by Frugal Technologies which claims fuels savings up to 15% through optimising engine and propellor interaction, and will also limit shaft power to ensure vessels remain within calculated EEXI limits. The system requires no manual adjustments to optimise for draught, load, waves and wind.
The system has been installed on Jette Theresa and Alice Theresa and has demonstrated fuels savings of 17%-20% at eco speeds or 10%-14% at the same speeds. The companies said return on investment was around 12 months for the upgrades.
The system will now be installed on all 13 of Christinia’s owned fleet in a bid to meet upcoming EEXI and CII regulations, cut fuel consumption, improve operational efficiency, cut carbon emissions and improve competitiveness.
“The market increasingly values a low carbon footprint when chartering tankers. Therefore, it makes a huge difference whether your vessel will receive a high or a low CII-rating. In addition, the Frugal Propulsion system provides us with very accurate data on the ship's performance, which helps us document our fuel consumption. Emission regulations will be tightened ongoing, and it is important to stay ahead,” said Rune Eriksen Lorentsen, Chief Operating Manger at Christiania Shipping.
“Shipowners choose our solution because it is quickly installed and ensures both a financial gain and a climate gain due to the significant reduction in fuel consumption. At the same time, we can help them to abide with the new regulations,” said Peter Hauschildt, managing director of Frugal Technologies.
