Singapore-headquartered Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) has placed its first large-size ammonia carrier newbuilding order from China’s CSSC Jiangnan Shipyard.

The vessel design developed independently by Jiangnan Shipyard for the four 93,000 cu m very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) is the largest type of ammonia carrier globally. Equipped with LPG dual-fuel engine, the vessels are measuring in 230 metres long and 36.6 metres wide, which will be classified by the classification society of LR.

The first of the vessels is due for delivery in mid-2026. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

“Green ammonia is regarded as the most promising alternative fuel for shipping industry to achieve zero-carbon emission. The growing demands of ammonia fuel is expected to keep increasing which will create more orders for long-distance ammonia carriers, and Jiangnan has been actively working with maritime industry partners to promote the development of zero-emission liquid gas carrier,” said Jiangnan Shipyard.

In June last year EPS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and ABS, to build an ammonia dual-fuelled gas carrier, which could be delivered as early as 2025.

In December 2021 Jiangnan Shipyard inked its first order for 93,000 cu m VLACs with JS&Co and CSTC.

With the addition of the new deal, Jiangnan Shipyard currently has seventeen very large gas carrier (VLGC)orders on hand, accounting for 23% in global VLGC construction market.
