EPS orders the world’s largest ethane carriers at Jiangnan Shipyard

Jiangnan Shipyard says it has inked a contract to build six 150,000 cu metre ultra large ethane carriers (ULECs) for Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS).

The ULEC orders with EPS represent the third newbuilding contract within a week that the Chinese shipbuilder has announced.

“The signing of this order makes Jiangnan the world’s first shipyard to build 150,000 cu metre ultra large ethane carriers, further extending products pool of the company,” said Jiangnan Shipyard. 

The newbuildings are scheduled for delivery in 2027.

It is the newest generation of ultra large ethane carrier independently developed and designed by Jiangnan Shipyard, adopting Mark III membrane containment system of GTT. It will be classified by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and equipped with cargo containment systems which can load ethane, ethylene, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and also being LNG-ready.

The scrubber-fitted vessel will also be equipped with SCR system and ethane-dual fuelled engine, can fully balance economic efficiency of ethane and the fuel.

In 2023 EPS placed an order with Jiangnan for the construction of six ammonia-ready VLACs.
