Dubai-based Lila Global, the shipowning subsidiary of the world’s largest cash buyer of end-of-life ships, GMS, has appointed Stephen Kunzer as its new CEO.

Kunzer comes with more than 30 years of experience in operating large fleets in the dry bulk, tanker and vehicle carrier sectors. Kunzer was a senior executive previously at Ofer Group companies Tanker Pacific Management and Eastern Pacific Shipping.

Low-profile Lila Global, owned by GMS Founder and Principal Dr Anil Sharma, operates a fleet of more than 40 vessels consisting largely of bulk carriers and tankers across various size ranges. The ships are mostly older units more than ten years old.

The company has embarked on a period of expansion recently and, according to a spokesperson, is focusing on further growth through the acquisition of older ships of good quality. The potential for upgrades, retrofits and energy-efficiency improvements is a priority.

“I am delighted to be joining Lila Global and look forward to building on the strong foundations laid by the existing team,” declared Kunzer last week. “Under their stewardship, the fleet has grown considerably over the past decade. My focus shall be on continuing to operate quality vessels that deliver results for our customers and further growing and diversifying the fleet.”

GMS boss Dr Sharma, added: “Steve brings a wealth of experience in running international shipping organisations at a time when Lila Global is seeking to expand the fleet and widen our portfolio, whilst maintaining the company’s reputation for transporting cargoes with care. I look forward to seeing what he and the existing management team will achieve together.”
