Hong Kong Chamber of Shipping launched
The Hong Kong Chamber of Shipping has been officially established to boost Hong Kong's status as an international shipping hub.
Initiated by Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Hing Chao, Chairman of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings, the Chamber was jointly established by China Merchants Energy Shipping, COSCO Shipping (Hong Kong), Petro China (Hong Kong), Sinopec (Hong Kong), CCS Hong Kong branch, Wah Kwong Maritime Transport, Shandong Port Group and other major industry players.
The aim of the Chamber is to power the national maritime hub construction and improve Hong Kong’s position in the shipping, financing and trading sectors.
Leung Chun-ying, said at the launch ceremony that the institutional advantage of the "one country, two systems" constitutes the unique edge of Hong Kong's shipping industry. China’s 13th and 14th Five Year Plan both addressed the supports to Hong Kong to enhance its core status as an international shipping centre.
Leung hopes Hong Kong could combine the strengths of mainland China for optimizing national maritime system, while moving towards the high value-added end of the value chain.
The Chamber aims to further promote collaborations on establishing a sustainable supply eco system; maritime education; policy research and deepening cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland ports.
