Two Saudi oil tankers suffered “significant damage” in sabotage attacks on four commercial vessels in waters off the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that Saudi Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources, HE Khalid Al-Falih, two tankers had been subjected to a sabotage attack in waters of the UAE Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) off the Port of Fujairah while on their way to cross into the Arabian Gulf. One of the vessels was loaded with crude for a US customer.

According to the Saudi report the two vessels suffered “significant damage” but there were no casualties or oil spill.

On Sunday the UAE said that four commercial vessels were targeted in sabotage attacks off its eastern coast. It has not given further details of the nature of the attacks or the damage caused.

The attacks came as tensions in the region rise with a tightening of US sanctions against Iran. On Thursday, the US Maritime Administration issued an  that "Iran or its proxies" could be targeting commercial shipping in the region.
