Who said what at Nor-Shipping 2015
Fireworks signaled the end of Nor-Shipping 2015 on Thursday. We take a look back at who said what over the last week.
Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg on the future direction of Norway’s shipping and offshore industries. “We will stimulate increased research, development and innovation in order to strengthen value creation and competitiveness of the maritime industry. The future for Norway relies on bring smarter not cheaper.”
Incoming DNV GL ceo Remi Eriksen on the outlook for the newbuilding market. “We probably see it being 2017 before we see an upswing in newbuilding ordering again. But it will not be to the levels we have seen during the past 10 years.”
Martin Stopford of Clarksons Research Services says shipping’s business model of the last 30 years is out of date. “Is that the business model you are going to use for the next 30 years? Because if you are I think it’s worn out, I think its dead, it's a Norwegian parrot if you know John Cleese.”
Angeliki Frangrou, chairman and ceo of Navios Group on the good and bad of diversification: “I think diversification is important but you have to understand the type of diversification. If it is a grain house going into shipping it doesn’t make sense its really a cost.”
Eddy H. Van Bouwel, policy planning senior advisor at ExxonMobil talks about shipping’s multi-fuel future. “What we’re looking at is a step change in the fuels needed for shipping. This means that refineries all over the world will need to look at what they will do - if refiners do want to invest in conversion capacity – cokers, hydro-fracking – they pretty much have to do it now. These units will take four or five years.”
Leon Patitsas, founder and ceo of Atlas Maritime says that conflict is good for the shipping industry. “Unfortunately whenever you have a conflict its positive for shipping overall.”
Siem Industries ceo Kristian Siem on why offshore needs to move away from bespoke solutions. “I no longer go to my tailor to get a new suit. Other clients always go to the tailor. It’s all bespoke. And that’s a huge potential for reducing cost.”
UKHO’s Paul Hailwood explains why ECDIS is not a one-week job. “Now [adoption is at] 54%. But we’re going to have a serious problem. Nobody can supply thousands of ECDIS consoles in the space of a year.”
New director of Nor-Shipping, Birgit Liodden, explains what the future holds for the show. “For shipping to prosper in the future it needs to be inclusive and forward thinking; encouraging fresh talent, innovation and new revenue streams. Nor-Shipping is a strong platform to promote these issues, affect positive change and add value to our industry.”
