The world’s first hydrogen-powered 5G terminal project in China’s north port of Qingdao has been put into service.

The terminal is the second phase project of Qingdao automated terminal and is the first to have applied both hydrogen power and 5G technology developed by the port.

The terminal can handle the loading and unloading of containers by intelligent systems remotely by 5G, and using automated equipment including unmanned guided vehicles and high-speed rail-mounted crane powered by hydrogen fuel.

These advanced technologies will help the entire terminal to achieve zero emissions.

Compared to traditional ports, the advanced terminal will see increased operational efficiency of 30% and reduce labour demand by 70%.

Qingdao automatic terminal project consists of three phases, the first phase was completed in 2017.The second phase terminal project includes two berths with a handling capacity of 1.7m teu annually.
