Cosco Pacific Bohai Rim ports do well, trouble brewing in other regions
Judging by the container throughput figures of major terminal operator Cosco Pacific, there seems to be some realignment of traffic happening in China, with a sharp spike of 6.1% growth seen in the volumes at the Bohai Rim ports in June from flat growth the month before, which appears to have been driven largely by much higher volumes at Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal.
Meanwhile at the Yangtze River Delta ports, which had been seeing good growth in the preceding two months, volume growth slump to just 2.3% with throughput of 857,400 teu in June compared to 838,300 teu in the previous corresponding period.
In the south of the country, the lackluster performance of the previous few months continued, with the Southeast Coast ports actually posting a 1.5% drop in volumes to 315,200 teu from 319,800 teu previously. The Pearl River Delta ports fared little better with just 1.1% growth in June.
And finally, Cosco Pacific's overseas ports managed to turn in reasonable numbers considering the continuing troubles in Greece where it owns Cosco Piraeus Container Terminal.
While volumes at Piraeus and at its Suez Canal Container Terminal fell 2.9% and 2.5% respectively in June, outstanding performances at its partially owned terminals in Singapore and Antwerp more than made up for this make up an overall gain of 3% in container throughput from the overseas segment.
