The extension of Container Terminal 2 at Jebel Ali adds 1m teu to the port taking total capacity to 15m teu annually. With 3,000 m of quay the terminal can now handle six mega-boxships at the same time.

Container Terminal 3, currently under construction, will increase capacity to 19m teu in 2014.

“We are delighted to welcome the MSC La Spezia to mark the start of operations at our brand new expansion.  We are committed to serving all our customers and helping them realise the efficiencies possible from the new generation vessels,” said HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairman of DP World.

The new expansion and the third terminal will help take pressure of existing facilities.

“With an average monthly throughput in excess of 1m teu over the past two years, Jebel Ali continues to be under pressure with larger vessels and a larger proportion of cargo destined for or originating from this market,” said Mohammed Al Muallem, senior vice president and managing director of DP World, UAE Region. “The new Terminal 3 will be one of the finest modern marine terminals in the world, with a quay length of 1,860 m, a 70 hectare storage yard, and a draft of 17 m.
