ICTSI $230m expansion of Manzanillo terminal in Mexico

The expansion of the terminal in the port of Mazanillo will up grade its capacity to 2m teu up from the present 1.2m teu.

Phase III of the expansion of the second Specialised Container Terminal (TEC II) includes the construction of more than 400 metres of additional quay, yards to store more than 800,000 teu, 900 plugs for reefers, the acquisition of two super post Panamax quay cranes and six other RTGs for a total of 10 super post Panamax cranes and up to 13 RTG cranes.

"We begin this new phase with the objective of providing Manzanillo and Mexico with a modern terminal with the operational capacity to meet the present and future needs of our customers. This ambitious investment plan is designed to receive the 400-metre (length) ships, the largest ones, to maintain connectivity with Asia. If we don't have it, Mexican foreign trade will be affected," said José Antonio Contreras, CEO of Contecon Manzanillo.

The construction works are considered for the period 2022-2025.

"Be assured that we agree on the objective of making the port grow and become more efficient", said Indira Vizcaino, Governor of Colima.

TEC II terminal operated by Contecon Manzanillo, has suffered operational complications over the past two years due to the disruptive effects of the pandemic on supply chains, transport supply and containers. Although some effects are still being felt, the terminal has sought to further equip itself to cope with the ups and downs in vessel arrivals and departures and container backlogs, such as the recent arrival of three super post panamax cranes.

In the first 10 months of this year Contecon Manzanillo has moved 1.02m teu, up 0.4% more than in the same period last year.

Also operating in this port are the container terminals of SSA, which in the January-October period handled 1.37m teu, up 1.9% compared to the same period in 2021; Hutchison Ports TIMSA, with 239,493 teu, up 20.8%; and OCUPA, with 275,398 teu, up 10.8%.

Manzanillo is the largest port in Mexico in container volume; for the period   of January-October  totalling 2.89m teu, up 3.5% compared to the same period last year, according to official data.
