Manzanillo International Terminal – Panama (MIT) has acquired two new super post-panamax cranes to strengthen the terminal’s offer.
The $20m-cranes are expected to be operational during the last quarter of 2022. Manufactured in Asia under the supervision of Panamanian engineers, the cranes are equipped with electric engines and LED lighting, for reducing the environmental footprint.
These new cranes will serve the neo-panamax vessels of up to 16,000 teu. The acquisition of this equipment brings the total number of gantry cranes at MIT-Panama to 21, allowing the attraction of new shipping routes.
“The two new STS cranes will consolidate Panama's competitiveness as a logistic platform for the benefit of our customers," said Manuel Pinzón, general manager of MIT.
MIT-Panama is a joint venture of Seattle-based SSA International and a group of local investors, that started operations in 1995 as the first privately-owned terminal in the country. During its 27 years of operation, the port terminal has handled more than 40m teu and 1.8 million vehicles, in addition to having served almost 57,000 vessels.
